"Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar!" ㅡ Malachi 1:10 

"너희가 내 단위에 헛되이 불사르지 못하게 하기 위하여 너희 중에 성전 문을 닫을 자가 있었으면 좋겠도다!"(말라기 1:10) 

How horrible that God wanted his own temple doors closed! This is one of the strongest biblical warnings about worship. If our worship isn't really about loving and honoring God, it won't do any good to go through the motions.

하나님께서 자신의 성전 문을 닫기 원하신다는 것은 참으로 끔찍한 일입니다. 이 말씀은 성경 중 예배에 관한 가장 강한 경고 중 하나입니다. 만약 우리 예배가 진정으로 하나님을 사랑하며 존중하는 것이 아니라면, 그 행위를 치르러 나가는 것은 아무 유익이 없을 것입니다.  

the Israelites thought their worship was about God. They came to the temple to win God's favor and seek God's helpㅡwasn't that all about God?

이스라엘 백성들은 그들의 예배가 하나님에 관한 것이었다고 생각했습니다. 그들은 하나님의 호의를 얻고 하나님의 도움을 구하고자 성전에 나왔습니다. 그것이 하나님에 관한 것이었을까요?

Many people of many religions, including many Christians, approach worship the same way. Often they are very concerned about the manner of worship. "We have to get this right," they think, "or God will be upset with us, won't answer our prayers, and might bring bad things upon us." Unfortunately they don't realize their thinking and their efforts are not really about God. If we worship that way, it is really about usㅡwhat we can get for ourselves from God.

많은 기독교인을 포함한 많은 종교를 가진 사람들은 같은 식으로 예배에 참석합니다. 종종 그들은 예배 형식에 큰 관심을 둡니다. "바르게 해야해." 그들은 그렇게 생각합니다. "혹은 하나님이 우리에게 화가 나실 것이야, 우리 기도를 듣지 않으실거야, 우리에게 나쁜 일이 일어날거야" 라는 식으로 말입니다. 불행히도 그들의 생각과 노력이 진정으로 하나님에 관한 것이 아니란 사실을 그들은 깨닫지 못합니다. 만약 우리가 그런 식으로 예배를 드린다면, 그것은 진정으로 우리 자신에게 집중하는 것입니다. 즉 하나님으로부터 우리를 위해 무엇을 얻을 것인가에 관한 것일 뿐입니다. 

God, of course, sees through to our selfish motives. He knows that such worship is not worship at all; it's only an attempt to manipulate him. When God says that his "name is to be feared among the nations," he wants us to be awestruck by his love for usㅡso awestruck that we cannot help praising him. That's the kind of fearㅡthat is, awe, wonder, and amazement at God's great loveㅡthat should engage our worship.

물론 하나님은 우리의 이기적인 동기를 살피십니다. 그는 그러한 예배는 전혀 예배가 아님을 아십니다. 그것은 하나님을 조종하려는 시도에 불과합니다. "자신의 이름이 열방 중에서 두려운 바 되기를"이란 말씀하실 때, 하나님은 우리가 우리를 위한 하나님의 사랑에 압도되기를 원하십니다. 너무도 압도되어 하나님을 찬양할 수 밖에 없도록 말입니다. 그것은 두려움의 일종입니다. 즉, 그것은 하나님의 큰 사랑에 대한 경외, 경이, 놀라움입니다. 우리의 예배가 바로 그와 같아야 합니다.

Dear Jesus, we are your temple. We are humbled that you would love us so much to save us and to honor us with the constant presence of your Spirit. We stand in awe of you! Amen.

존귀하신 예수님, 우리는 주의 성전입니다. 주께서 우리를 너무도 사랑하시어 주의 영의 지속적 임재로 우리를 구원하시며 존귀히 여기심에 머리 숙입니다. 우리는 주를 경외합니다. 아멘.
