I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. - Philippians 4:12   나는 비천에 처할 줄도 알고 풍부에 처할 줄도 알아 모든 일 곧 배부름과 배고픔과 풍부와 궁핍에도 처할 줄 아는 일체의 비결을 배웠노라 - (빌 4:12)As I drove up to the assisted living facility, my friend was ready and waiting. It was Tuesday, our breakfast day. With some effort he pulled his aged legs into the car,  placed the cane between us, and let me fasten his seat belt. Then, buckled in, he sighed quietly, "Nothing gets easier."차를 몰고 요양시설로 찾아 갔을 때 친구는 벌써부터 나와 기다리고 있었습니다. 화요일은 우리가 함께 아침 식사를 하는 날입니다. 노쇠한 다리를 힘겹게 차에 집어넣고, 지팡이를 사이에 놓아두었습니다. 그런 후에 안전벨트를 채워주었습니다. 안전벨트를 맨 친구는 조용히 한숨을 쉬며, "이것도 점점 힘들어지네."My quiet, unassuming friend remembered other days - back when he was a strong, vibrant young man.  At our breakfast we could sometimes coax stories out of him about being a pilot in World War II. Or he might share with us some memories he enjoyed from decades of playing golf. He had lived a healthy, active, productive life.말수도 많지 않고 자신을 내세우지도 않는 친구가 과거를 회상했습니다. 그 때만 해도 강인하고 활동적인 청년이었습니다. 함께 식사할 때마다 그에게 2차 세계 대전 당시 전투기 조종사 시절 얘기를 해달라고 조르곤 합니다. 또는 수십 년 동안 골프를 치면서 누렸던 기쁨에 대한 기억들을 함께 나누곤 합니다. 친구는 건강하고 , 활동적이고 매우 생산적인 삶을 살았던 사람이었습니다.  But now his legs and the body that had served him well for nearly a century had become unsteady and unreliable. Simple tasks had become challenging. The sigh that came was understandable: "Nothing gets easier."근 백년을 잘 사용했던 다리와 신체가 이제는 불안정하고 의지할 수 없게 되었습니다. 아주 간단한 일도 꽤 어려워졌습니다. "이것도 점점 힘들어지네"라는 그의 한숨이 이해할 만 합니다.His gentle sigh wasn't a protest; it wasn't a grumbling complaint. My friend was simply stating a fact. What countless generations have experienced was now his lot;  he accepted it - with grace and gentleness and a trusting contentment. My friend had learned what the apostle Paul learned -  to be content in every situation.조용히 내쉬는 한숨은 저항도 투덜대는 불평도 아니었습니다. 친구는 그저 사실을 말했을 뿐입니다. 수많은 세대들이 경험했던 것이 이제 그의 몫이 되었을 뿐입니다. 은혜 가운데서도 부드럽게, 그리고 신뢰함으로 누리는 만족함으로 그 고통을 자신의 몫으로 받아들였습니다.Nothing gets easier But by an interesting twist of God's grace, we can grow spiritual fruit: patience, kindness, gentleness, contentment.쉬운 일은 하나도 없습니다. 하지만, 하나님의 은혜로 인하여 우리가 알지 못했던 반전이 일어날 때, 인내, 친절, 온유함과 자족감과 같은 영적 결실을 거둘 수 있습니다.PRAYER (기도) Lord, grant us contentment as we live out our lives. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me ㅡ put it into practice. Philippians 4:9너희는 내게 배우고 받고 듣고 본 바를 행하라. 그리하면 평강의 하나님이 너희와 함께 계시리라 (빌 4:8-9) For many people, the word 'discipline' has a negative connotation. We tend to associate the word 'discipline' with the idea of punishment.많은 사람들은 '연단'이라는 단어를 부정적으로 생각합니다. 흔히 '연단'이라는 말을 징계와 연결시킵니다.But discipline is not the same as punishment. To discipline someone is to train them to develop a pattern of behavior or shape their character. It often happens by developing habits so that doing a task becomes a regular part of our life, something we do almost without effort.그러나 연단은 징계와 똑같은 것이 아닙니다. 누군가를 연단하는 것은 일정한 행동의 패턴을 개발하거나 그 사람의 성품을 만들기 위해서 훈련시키는 것을 말합니다. 흔히 습관들을 발전시킴으로써 어떤 임무를 감당하는 것이 마치 거의 아무런 노력을 기울이지 않아도 우리가 행하는 생활의 일정한 부분이 되게 됩니다.Many people today learn how to type at a computer keyboard. At first, the practice of making the smallest finger on your left hand move from the 'q' to the 'z' on a keyboard seems awkward and difficult. But the more you practice, the more natural it becomes. If you work at a computer keyboard often, you probably don't even think about the movement of that finger anymore. The skill of typing has been produced in you through disciplined practice.오늘날 많은 사람들은 컴퓨터의 자판을 어떻게 치는지를 배웁니다. 맨 처음 여러분의 왼쪽 손의 새끼 손가락을 좌판의 'ㅂ'에서 'ㅋ'로 움직이는 연습을 해보면 어색하고 힘이 듭니다. 그러나 연습을 하면 할수록 자연스럽게 됩니다. 컴퓨터 자판을 자주 사용하게 된다면, 아마 새끼 손가락의 움직임을 거의 의식조차 하지 않을 것입니다. 꾸준한 연단의 연습을 통해서 타이핑 기술이 여러분 속에 자리잡게 되었기 때문입니다.In our text for today, Paul instructs the Christians in Philippi to practice habits that will help them experience God's peace. He asks them to learn to seek God through disciplines such as prayer, worship, and the study of all that is true and right. They are to develop habits that may initially seem awkward  and difficult but will help train them so that they may develop the character that God intends for them.오늘의 말씀에서 바울은 빌립보 그리스도인들에게 하나님의 평강을 경험하도록 도움을 주는 습관들을 연습하라고 얘기합니다. 바울은 그 그리스도인들에게 기도와 예배, 그리고 참되고 올바른 모든 것을 공부하는 일 같은 연단들을 통해 하나님을 추구하는 법을 배우라고 요청하십니다. 그 그리스도인들은 처음 시작할 때는 어색하고 힘들어 보이지만 자신들을 훈련시키는데 도움을 주는 습관들을 발전시켜 하나님께서 그들에게 원하시는 성품을 개발해야 했던 것입니다. PRAYER (기도)Father in heaven, grant me the discipline to develop good habits for shaping my character. Make me more like Christ each day. Amen.하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지, 저의 성품을 이루는데 좋은 습관을 개발하도록 저를 연단시켜 주시옵소서. 제가 매일 그리스도를 더 닮아가게 하시옵소서. 아멘.              

In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. Philippians 4:6모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 하나님께 아뢰라. 빌 4:6The great hymn "Amazing Grace" summarizes is biblical faith well: "Grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home." If grace reveals that joy is a gift, then prayer is the Lord's gracious means through which he daily sustains that joy.위대한 찬송가인 "어메이징 그레이스"(나 같은 죄인 살리신)는 성경의 진리를 잘 요약하고 있습니다. 그것은 "이제껏 내가 산 것도 주님의 은혜요, 또 장차 본향에(주님의 은혜가) 인도해 주시리"라는 것입니다. 은혜가, 기쁨은 곧 선물이라는 점을 드러내준다면, 기도는 주님의 은혜의 수단임을 알려줍니다. 기도를 통해서 주님은 매일 그 기쁨을 유지시켜 주십니다. We sometimes believe we are independent, self-sufficient people. Our tired minds, aching backs, and callous hands that produced a successful career and a comfortable home seem to affirm that myth. But what if corporate restructuring takes away the paycheck, or terminal illness robs our strength and vitality? Anxiety, worry, and fear set in, taking the place of our pride. Life comes from the Lord, and so does daily help.때때로 우리는 독립적이며 스스로 알아서 살아가는 사람이라고 생각합니다. 성공적인 경력과 안락한 집을 제공해 주었던 우리의 지쳐있는 정신과 쑤시는 등, 그리고 거칠어진 손바닥이 그 신화를 확인해 주는 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 만일 기업의 구조조정 때문에 해고 당하거나 시한부 질병 대문에 힘과 활력이 사라져 버린다면 어떻게 될까요? 염려와 근심과 두려움이 우리의 자만의 자리를 차지하고 들어와 자리잡게 됩니다.  인생은 주님으로부터 옵니다. 매일 얻는 도움도 마찬가지입니다.We come to the Lord through prayer, and the fruit of prayer is peace. Yet prayer is not a mantra, and we can't use it to try to manipulate God. Prayer is a divine gift to strengthen the bonds of love between us and God. 우리는 기도를 통해서 주님에게 나아가며, 기도의 열매는 평안입니다. 그렇지만 기도는 주문이 아닙니다. 그리고 기도를 하나님을 조종하기 위해 사용해서는 안됩니다. 기도는 주문이 아닙니다.그리고 기도를 하나님을 조종하기 위해 사용해서는 안됩니다. 기도는 우리와 하나님의 사이의 사랑의 끈을 강화시켜주기 위해 주어진 신성한 선물입니다. The act of prayer itself affirms our dependence on him for peace and joy. Peace is knowing that death is overcome by resurrection, falsehood by truth, confusion by wisdom, hatred by love. This is the joyful fruit of believers who seek the Lord! Then, when all else has failed, we can still say, "I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my say Savior"(Habakkuk 3:18).기도의 행위는 평안과 기쁨을 위해 우리가 하나님을 의지하고 있음을 확증시켜 줍니다. 평안은 죽음이 부활에 의해, 거짓이 진리에 의해, 혼란이 지혜에 의해, 미움이 사랑에 의해 극복된다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 이것이 바로 주님을 추구하는 신자들의 기쁜 열매입니다! 그러므로 다른 모든 것이 다 실패한다 할지라도, 우리는 여전히 "나는 여호와로 즐거워하며 나는 나의 구원의 하나님으로 말미암아 기뻐하리로다"(합 3:18)고 말할 수 있습니다.PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, I rejoice in you. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Philippians 4:5너희 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게 하라. 주께서 가까우시니라. 빌 4:5Believers will inevitably face conflict with each other because of the lingering influence of sin. Yet they are also under the influence of the Holy Spirit, who commands them to exercise the gentle joy that comes to us through the good news of Jesus Christ.아직도 죄의 영향력이 남아있기 때문에 신자들은 불가피하게 서로 갈등에 직면하게 됩니다. 그렇지만, 신자들은 성령님의 영향 아래 있습니다. 성령님은 예수 그리스도의 복음을 통해서 우리에게 임하는 온유한 기쁨을 행사하도록 신자들에게 명하십니다.Gentle joy recognizes that believers share a common hope. Regardless of our differences , our names are all written in God's "book of life." Believers also share a common purpose. They contend together in the single cause of the gospel even though each one has a different role. Finally, believers exercise common sense. Each child of God lives at a different stage of Christlike development.  온유한 기쁨은 신자들이 공동의 소망을 품고 있음을 인식합니다. 우리의 차이점에 상관없이, 우리의 이름은 다 하나님의 "생명책"에 기록되어 있습니다. 신자들은 또한 공동의 목적에 동참하고 있습니다. 신자들은 비록 각자 다른 역할을 감당하고 있지만 단일한 복음의 대의를 함께 추구합니다. 마지막으로, 신자들은 공동의 상식(common sense)을 행사합니다. 하나님의 자녀들 각각은 그리스도를 닮아 성장하는 일에 있어서 서로 다른 단계에서 살아가고 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 산전수전을 다 겪은 베테랑이지만, 어떤 사람들은 기쁨의 여행을 이제 막 시작한 사람들입니다. Some are seasoned veterans, while others are just beginning the journey of joy. We all know that we need the gentle patience of others. What's the point? Unresolved conflict thrives under a horizontal views of life. Gentle joy, however, pursues a vertical view of life. It is always willing to aim "to agree with each other in the Lord," for it refuses to undermine the common hope, common purpose, and common sense of Jesus Christ. 우리 모두는 다른 사람들이 우리를 온유함으로 참아줄 필요가 있는 사람들임을 잘 알고 있습니다. 핵심이 무엇입니까? 갈등이 해소되지 않은 채 지속적으로 번져나가는 경우는 우리의 시각이 옆으로만 퍼져나갈 때 나타납니다. 그러한 관점은 개인적인 이익만 높이며, 편견을 조장하고, 기쁨을 앗아가 버립니다. 그러나 온유한 기쁨은 삶에 대한 수직적인 시각을 추구합니다. 그 기쁨은 언제나 "주 안에서 서로 뜻을 같이 하는 일"을 목표로 합니다. 이는 그 기쁨이 예수 그리스도의 공동의 소망, 공동의 목적, 공동의 상식을 손상시키기를 거부합니다.  A follower of Jesus refuses to be imprisoned by conflict. Instead, the believer will make every effort to gently "keep the unity of the Spirit"(Ephesians 4:3).예수님을 따르는 제자는 갈등에 얽매이기를 거부합니다. 대신에 신자는 온유함으로 "성령이 하나되게 하신 것을 지키기 위해" 모든 노력을 기울일 것입니다(엡 4:3).PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, "make me a channel of your peace ... Where there is darkness, let me bring your light; and where there's sadness, ever joy." In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.  사랑의 주님, "저를 주님의 평안의 통로로 삼으시옵소서 ... 흑암이 있는 곳에 제가 당신의 빛을 전달하게 하시고, 슬픔이 있는 곳에 항상 기쁨이 있게 하시옵소서." 예수님이름으로 기도 드립니다. 아멘.                  

That is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends! (Philippians 4:1)그러므로 --- 사랑하는 자들아, 이와같이 주 안에 서라! (빌 4:1)A local TV station advertises that their news is uniquely prepared "for you." In return, it requires "by you." Such a bold claim, however, is probably better reserved for the Bible. The good news that joy is Jesus' gift for you invites a response by you.     한 지역 텔레비젼 방송국이 자기들의 뉴스는 특별하게 "여러분을 위해서" 준비되었으며, 그 뉴스에 대한 "여러분의" 응답이 필요하다고 광고합니다. 그러나 이와같은 대담한 주장은 아마도 성경에 더 잘 맞는 것으로 보입니다. 기쁨이 여러분을 위해 준비한 예수님의 선물이라는 좋은 소식은 여러분의 응답을 초대하고 있습니다.Paul's longing for his dear friends moves beyond social contact to spiritual impact. They are his "joy and crown" because they stand firm in the Lord. From Paul's warm friendship flows his repeated encouragement that they find their strength in the joy of the Lord(see Nehemiah 8:10). Since this good news is for them, it calls for a response by them.자기의 사랑하는 벗들을 보고싶은 바울의 마음은 사회적인 접촉으로부터 영적인 영향력으로 넘어가고 있습니다. 그의 친구들이 주 안에서 굳게 서 있기 때문에 그들은 그의 "기쁨이며 면류관"입니다. 바울의 따스한 우정에서부터 그들에게 주님의 기쁨 가운데서 힘을 찾으라는 거듭되는 격려가 흘러나옵니다(참조 느 8:10). 이 복음은 그들을 위한 것이기 때문에 그들 편에서의 응답을 요청하고 있습니다.It's far too easy to forget the main message of grace and revert to old, deadly patterns ㅡ like trying to earn God's favor or carelessly putting our hope in the riches of the world. But what can be seen and touched can also be easily lost or stolen. Believers, therefore, must be vigilant. "What is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal"(2 Corinthians 4:18). In the gospel, joy always remains the gift of God's eternal grace!     은혜의 중심적인 메시지를 망각하고 이전의 고질적인 패턴으로 되돌아가기가 너무나 쉽습니다. 그래서 하나님의 총애를 얻으려고 노력하거나 세상의 부요에 부질없는 소망을 두기도 합니다. 그러나 눈으로 볼 수 있고 손으로 만져지는 것은 또한 쉽게 사라지며 도둑 맞습니다. 그러므로 믿는 자들은 언제나 눈을 뜨고 경계심을 늦추어서는 안됩니다. "보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원합니다"(고후 4:18). 복음 가운데 있는 기쁨이 언제나 하나님의 영원한 은혜의 선물입니다!God's good news of joy in Jesus Christ is uniquely prepared for you! What is your response? Will you allow his eternal joy to enter and define your heart?예수 그리스도 안에 있는 기쁨에 대한 하나님의 복음은 특별히 여러분을 위해서 준비되었습니다! 여러분의 반응은 무엇입니까? 여러분은 자신의 마음에 그의 영원한 기쁨이 들어와 자리잡도록 허락하시겠습니까?PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, I know Satan seeks to take away what you give. Yet I praise you that I already have victory in Jesus. Give me courage to stand firm in his strength. Amen.사랑의 주님, 저는 사탄이 저에게서 주님이 주시는 것을 앗아가려고 노리고 있음을 알고 있습니다. 그렇지만 제가 이미 예수님 안에서 누리고 있는 승리를 찬양드립니다. 제가 예수님의 능력 안에서 굳건히 설 수 있도록 격려해 주시옵소서. 아멘      

Our citizenship is in heaven. (Philippians 3:20)우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있는 지라. (빌 3:20)I was visiting my infant grandson when his Canadian birth certificate came in the mail. I said to him, "Elliot, you may not understand what you have just received, but this shows how really blessed you are. An infrastructure is set up to provide safety, education, health care, and so much more! Hopefully, in a world where many risk life and limb to enter this country, you can grow to appreciate this great gift of citizenship, and you, in turn, will contribute to the welfare of this country."이제 갓 태어난 손주를 방문하고 있을 때에 손자의 캐나다 출생 증명서가 우편으로 도착했습니다. "엘리엇, 네가 지금은 이 우편물이 무엇인지 모르겠지만, 이건 네가 얼마나 축복받은 사람인지 보여주는 거란다"라고 손주에게 말했습니다. "출생 증명서란 안전, 교육, 보건 등 살아가는데 필요한 사회 제반 시설이 확보되었다는 걸 말해주는 거란다. 많은 사람이 이 나라에 들어오기 위해 목숨을 걸어야 하는 세상에서 우리 아기가 시민권을 받았다는 사실에 감사하고, 이 나라의 번영을 위해 나중에 기여하게 되기를 기도할게."We must never forget though, as Paul reminds us, that we are also citizens of heaven. God gives us life itself - along with protection, healing, and sound teaching for full life with him! We show appreciation for this gift by following Jesus and keeping our eyes on those who live by faith in him.사도 바울께서 우리에게 일깨워준 것처럼, 우리 역시 하늘나라의 시민권을 지닌 자임을 잊지말아야 합니다. 우리에게 생명을 주실 때, 하나님께서는 우리를 보호하시고, 치유해 주시며, 그분과 함께 살아가는 충만한 삶에 대한 건강한 가르침 또한 주셨습니다. 예수님을 따르는 삶을 살면서, 주님에 대한 믿음으로 살아가는 사람들을 바라보며 우리가 받은 이 선물에 대한 감사를 표하게 됩니다.Sadly, as Paul points out, there are many others who are enemies of the cross. In other words, they do not want to recognize their sin that Jesus paid for on the cross. "Their god is their stomach" - all kinds of fleeting appetites - and they occupy themselves with selfish gain and the power, status, or fame(glory) that this world thinks is important. But all these things only fade away.애석하게도, 바울이 지적하듯, 십자가를 대적하며 살아가는 사람도 많습니다. 바꿔 표현하자면, 이들은 예수께서 십자가에서 자신들을 위해 대속해주신 죄가 무엇인지  인정하고 싶지 않는 사람들입니다. 계속해서 바뀌는 식욕을 채워가는 인생이기에 "그들의 신은 식욕"이며, 이 세상이 중요하다고 여기는 이기적인 이득과 권력, 지위와 명성으로 자신을 채워갑니다. 그러난 이 모든 것은 금세 사라질 것입니다.To be included as citizenship of God's kingdom, we do not have to risk life and limb; rather, we place our hope, trust, and love, in Jesus Christ, who has the power "to bring everything under his control." How truly blessed we are!천국의 시민권을 가진 자가 되기 위해서 목숨을 걸 필요는 없습니다. 대신에, "만물을 자기에게 복종하게 하실 수 있는" "능력을 갖추고 계신 예수 그리스도에게 우리는 모든 소망, 믿음, 사랑을 두면 됩니다. 우리는 얼마나 큰 축복을 받은 자들입니까!PRAYER (기도)Spirit of God, enable us to be faithful citizens of your kingdom.  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me ... (Philippians 3:14)푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라 (빌 3:14) A rubber band isn't much use unless it is stretched. Similarity, we will not achieve the peak of our potential unless we are stretched by God.늘어나지 않는다면, 고무줄은 별로 쓸모가 없습니다. 마찬가지로 만일 우리가 하나님이 잡아당기실 때 늘어나지 않는다면, 우리가 지닌 잠재력을 최고조로 달성하지 못할 것입니다.Christian psychiatrist Paul Tournier explains that a pilgrimage of faith means having the courage to step out from a secure place into an insecure place. It is like a trapeze artist who swings from one trapeze to another. There is that breathless moment when the artist is in midair between the two trapeze. The performer has to leap, trusting that he or she will be able to grab the other trapeze. Likewise, we have to stretch to catch the next opportunity God sends our way.크리스챤으로서 정신과 의사였던 폴 투르니에는 믿음의 순례길은 안전한 장소에서 안전하지 않은 곳으로 걸음을 내딛는 용기를 갖는 것을 의미한다고 설명합니다. 그것은 마치 한 쪽 그네에서 반대편 그네를 향해 건너뛰는 공중그네 곡예사와 같습니다. 곡예사가 그네 사이의 공중을 나는 모습은 숨막히는 순간입니다. 그 곡예사는 반대 편 그네를 붙잡을 수 있을 것이라고 믿고 힘껏 도약해야 합니다. 마찬가지로 우리는 하나님이 우리 인생길에 보내주시는 다음 기회를 붙잡기 위해 온 몸을 뻗쳐야 합니다.Paul sees himself stretched by God so that he can achieve his full potential. It is the same with us. We have to be willing to go beyond our comfort zones. We must forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead. We must relinquish our fears and focus on what we can be if we allow God to stretch us.바울은 자신이 가지고 있던 잠재력을 다 발휘할 수 있도록 하나님이 자기를 잡아당겨 늘이신다고 보고 있습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리도 기꺼이 편안한 안전지대를 넘어서야 합니다. 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 향해 온 몸을 힘껏 내뻗어야 합니다. 만일 하나님이 우리를 잡아 늘이시도록 하나님께 자신을 내어드리고자 한다면, 두려움을 버리고 우리의 미래 모습에 초점을 맞추어야 합니다.Stretching means trusting God in moments of surrender. Stretching means walking into our fears and coming out as people of faith. Stretching means believing in God when we don't see him working. Ron tended to overeat and to drink at dangerous levels, and that made him overweight. Sanctification involves walking with Christ, dying to your old ways, and coming to full life in him. There is nothing quick and easy about it. (빌 3:4)Resumes, references, and work awards all serve to market personal success. Of course, intentional effort that results in achievement is rightfully celebrated. But when it comes to eternal joy, human effort and achievement do not factor into the equation.이력서, 추천서, 공로상 등등의 모든 것이 개인적인 성공을 마케팅 하는데 도움이 됩니다. 물론 업적을 이루기 위한 의도적인 노력은 당연히 축하할 일입니다. 그러나 영원한 기쁨의 문제에 있어서 인간의 노력과 업적은 보탤 수 있는 요소가 못 됩니다.One of the greatest joy killers is the legalistic idea that salvation must be partially earned through good works. But who and what are good enough? Do you know anyone who has never had a bad thought or has never given in to temptation?기쁨을 죽이는 가장 큰 요소 중 하나는 구원의 일부분은 선행을 통해 획득하는 것으로 생각하는 율법주의적인 생각입니다. 그러나 누가 그리고 무엇이 충분히 선합니까? 당신은 단 한 번도 나쁜 생각이나 유혹에 빠지지 않은 사람을 알고 있습니까?The truth is that the harder we try to be good enough for God, the more frustrated we become. So who is good enough?우리가 하나님을 위해서 더 선해지려고 노력하면 할 수록, 더 좌절하게 되는 것이 사실입니다. 우리는 바울이 썼듯이 갈등하면서 살아가고 있습니다. "... 원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없노라. 내가 원하는 바 선은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 원하지 아니하는 바 악을 행하는 도다"(롬 7:18-19). 그리하여 우리는 바울이 그랬듯이 우리가 얼마나 비참한 상태인가를 깨닫습니다(7:24). 그러므로 누가 충분히 선하다고 말할 수 있겠습니까?       Only Jesus! His perfect sacrifice alone allows the believer to be filled with joy and gladness. The attitude, actions, and achievement of legalism will only frustrate the pursuit of his joy. Protect your from legalism. Remind yourself that you cannot achieve joy for yourself. Instead, trust the One who achieved it for you!    오직 예수님만이 그렇게 선하십니다. 그 분의 완전한 희생 만이 신자로 하여금 기쁨과 즐거움에 충만하도록 해주십니다. 율법주의적인 태도와 행동과 업적은 예수님의 기쁨을 추구하는 일을 좌절시킬 뿐입니다. 율법주의로부터 당신의 기쁨의 보호하십시오! 당신 혼자 힘만으로는 기쁨을 달성할 수 없다는 점을 자신에게 일깨우십시오. 그리고 그리하는 대신, 당신을 위해 그 기쁨을 성취하신 그 분을 신뢰하십시오!PRYER (기도)Dear Lord, forgive me when I try to be good enough to be counted worthy of your love. We ... put no confidence in the flesh ... (Philippians 3:3)육체를 신뢰하지 않는 우리 ... (빌 3:3)Lots of airlines promote Frequent Flyer benefits, Elite status, and First Class upgrades. I can appreciate the perks of extensive travel, but they can lead to pride. Wider seats and more leg room do not really make anyone a "first class" person. 많은 항공사들이 비행기로 자주 여행하는 여행자에 대한 혜택, 엘리트 좌석, 일등석 등등으로의 승격을 장려하고 있습니다. 많은 여행 때문에 얻는 특전에 대해 고맙게 여길 수는 있지만, 그러한 특전이 그것을 받아 누리는 사람을 교만하게 만들 수 있습니다. 더 넓은 좌석, 다리를 더 뻗을 수 있는 공간을 차지한다고 해서 그 자리에 앉는 사람을 진짜 "일등급" 사람으로 만들어주는 것은 아닙니다.The Bible considers pride to be evil because it creates "disgrace"(Proverbs 11:2). It overestimates self-importance and underestimates the value of others. Rather than live by the grace that delights equally in rich and poor, intelligent and learning disabled, business executive and unemployed, pride ignores God's character, sets aside grace, and accepts only a personal "first class status: "I'm better than others."성경은 교만을 악으로 간주합니다. 교만이 "욕"을 가져오기 때문입니다(잠 11:2). 교만은 자기의 중요성은 과대평가하고 다른 사람들의 가치에 대해서는 과소평가하게 만듭니다. 부자나 가난한 자, 지식이 있는 자나 똑똑하지 못한 자, 사업가나 직업을 잃은 실업자를 똑같이 즐거워 하는 은혜로 말미암아 살아가기 보다는, 교만은 하나님의 성격을 무시하고, 은혜를 제쳐버리고, 오직 개인의 "일등급" 위신만을 받아들이며, "내가 다른 사람들보다 낫지"라고 말합니다. Paul fought the temptation to be proud. He was from a special people chosen by God, from a special class of people within Israel, and  from a uniquely devout and zealous religions family. But he considered it all "rubbish." Why? Because "confidence in the flesh" only creates further tension, division, quarrels, and ultimately hatred. Pride destroys the gift of joy.바울은 교만하려는 유혹과 싸웠습니다. 그는 하나님의 택함을 받은 선민 출신이었으며, 이스라엘 안에서도 특별한 계층에 속했었으며, 종교적으로도 헌신적이며 열심있는 가문 출신이었습니다. 그러나 그는 그 모든 것을 "쓰레기"(배설물)로 여겼습니다. 그 까닭이 무엇입니까? "육체에 대한 자신감"은 오직 긴장감과 분열과 싸움과 궁극적으로는 증오만을 조성할 뿐이기 때문입니다. 교만은 기쁨의 선물을 파괴해 버립니다.To protect joy from pride, our hearts should be defined by these words: "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world"(Galatians 6:14). Only in humble gratitude is joy sustained.교만으로부터 기쁨을 보호하기 위해서는 우리 마음에 다음과 같은 말을 항상 명심해야 합니다. "내게는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가 외에 결코 자랑할 것이 없으니 그리스도로 말미암아 세상이 나를 대하여 십자가에 못 박히고 내가 또한 세상에 대하여 그러하니라"(갈 6:14). 오직 겸손한 감사 가운데서만 기쁨이 유지됩니다.    PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, by your Holy Spirit help me to resist the deadly sin of pride. Help me to fix my eyes on Jesus, whose work alone brings dignity, value, and joy to my life. Amen.사랑의 주님, 당시의 성령으로 저를 도우사 교만이라는 대죄에 저항할 수 있게 도와주시옵소서. 제 눈을 저의 삶에 존엄과 가치와 기쁨을 제공해 주신 주님에게만 고정시키게 도와주시옵소서. 아멘.    

Rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write(these) thing ... and it is a safeguard for you. (Philippians. 3:1) ... 주 안에서 기뻐하라. 너희에게 같은 말을 쓰는 것이 내게는 수고로움이 없고 너희에게는 안전하니라. (빌 3:1)Joy is a precious gift. It is so precious that it must be protected from forces that suppress it. In fact, Paul's tone exudes urgency as he calls believers to be vigilant about guarding their spiritual birthright.기쁨은 귀중한 선물입니다. 너무나도 소중하기 때문에 기쁨을 앗아가려는 모든 힘으로부터 기쁨을 보호해야 합니다. 사실 믿는 이들에게 그들의 출생상의 영적 권리를 깨어 지키라는 바울의 어조에서 우리는 시급함이 느껴집니다.The words "rejoice in the Lord" can also be interpreted to mean "let the Lord be the one who makes you happy" or "find your joy in him and in him alone.""주 안에서 기뻐하라"라는 말은 "주님을 너로 하여금 행복하게 해주시는 분으로 삼으라"거나 "주님에게서만 너의 기쁨을 찾으라"는 말로 해석될 수도 있습니다.The great threat to real joy is the belief that joy is either a reward for good work or the fruit of a combination of God's love and human achievement. The Bible, however, directs us to ask, "With what shall I come before the Lord ... ?"(Micah 6:6). The answer is "Nothing ---- nothing but my sin and emptiness." I have nothing that deserves the Lord's reward and his joy.진정한 기쁨에 대한 최대의 위협은 기쁨이 선행에 대한 보상이거나 하나님의 사랑에 인간의 업적을 결합한 결과라고 믿는 것입니다. 그러나 성경은 우리에게 "내가 무엇을 가지고 여호와 앞에 나아갈까?"(미 6:6)라고 묻도록 하십니다. 그리고 그 질문에 대한 대답은 "나의 죄와 나의 빈 손 이외에는 아무것도 없습니다"입니다. 나는 주님의 보상이나 주님이 주시는 기쁨을 받을 만한 일을 한 것이 전혀 없습니다.Joy is a gift, the fruit of salvation in Jesus Christ. The Bible considers any other perspective a betrayal of the gospel.기쁨은 선물입니다. 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 구원의 열매입니다. 성경은 그 이외의 다른 시각을 복음에 대한 배신으로 간주합니다.The psalmist says, "Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man's behalf! ... Come, let us rejoice in him"(Psalm 66:5-6). Be vigilant in protecting your joy in Jesus Christ!시편 기자는 이렇게 말합니다. "와서 하나님께서 행하신 것을 보라. 사람의 아들들에게 행하심이 엄위하시도다! ... 우리가 거기서 주로 말미암아 기뻐하였도다!"(시 66:5-6). 예수 그리스도 안에서 얻은 여러분의 기쁨을 잘 지키십시오!PRAYER (기도)Lord, protect me from believing that human achievement can refine your gift of joy. Help me to praise your name, rest in your love, and trust in you alone as Savior. I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. (Philippians 2:20)이는 뜻을 같이하여 너희 사정을 진실히 생각할 자가 이밖에 내게 없음이라. (빌 2:20)Perhaps you are in a time of emotional discouragement and need a word of encouragement. Maybe you feel like a spiritual orphan and need some gracious assurance. Do you long for a voice of hope as you mourn the untimely death of a child? In difficult times, true friends are essential. A true friend one who is ready to help, comfort, and stand by another, especially in times of adversity.     혹시 지금 당신은 정서적으로 낙담할 만한 시기를 보내고 있어서 격려의 말이 필요할지 모르겠습니다. 영적으로 고아처럼 느껴져 어떤 자비로운 확신을 받을 필요가 있을지 모르겠습니다. 갑작스레 죽은 자식 때문에 슬퍼서 소망의 음성을 필요로 하고 있지 않습니까? 힘든 시기에는 진정한 친구가 필수적입니다. 진정한 친구는 특히 역경의 시기에 기꺼이 도와주고 위로하며 다른 사람의 곁에 서는 사람입니다.But a true friend is also discerning. A friend asks hard question confronts falsehood, and demands truth. Ultimately, this kind of honesty can be the best soil for encouragement, assurance, and hope.그러나 또한 진정한 친구는 분별력이 있습니다. 친구는 하기 힘든 질문을 하며, 거짓과 대결하며, 진실을 요구합니다. 궁극적으로 이러한 종류의 정직성이 격려와 확신 및 소망의 가장 좋은 밭이 될 수 있습니다.This is what Paul saw and experienced in two friends. Timothy was a friend who was like a son to Paul "in the work of the gospel" of Christ, and Epaphroditus was like a brother, serving as a "fellow worker" and "fellow soldier" in the cause of Christ. Paul welcome these friends with joy because they shared a genuine Christ-centered interest in the well-being of others. The most dependable friend, however, is Jesus. 이 점을 바울은 두 친구에게서 보았고 경험했습니다. 바울에게 디모데는 "함께 복음을 위하여 수고한" 아들과 같은 친구였습니다. 에바브로디도는 바울에게 형제와 같은 사람으로서, 그리스도를 위하여 "함께 수고하고" "함께 군사된 자"였습니다. 바울은 기쁨으로 이 두 친구들을 환영했습니다. 그들이 다른 사람들이 잘 되는 일에 진정한 그리스도 중심적인 관심을 갖고 동참했기 때문입니다.   The most dependable friend, however, is Jesus. As the friend of sinners, he is always ready to help, comfort, and stand by those who turn in repentance to him. His help is always encouraging, his comfort is assuring, and his presence is the foundation of hope. All who trust in Jesus can be called "God's friend"(James 2:23).그러나 가장 의지할 수 있는 친구는 예수님입니다. 죄인들의 친구로서, 예수님은 언제나 돕고 위로해 줄 준비가 되어 있으며, 회개하면서 예수님에게 나아오는 사람들 곁에 서 주시는 분이십니다. 예수님의 도우심은 언제나 고무적이며, 그 분의 위로는 확신을 줍니다. 그리고 그 분의 임재는 소망의 토대입니다. 예수님을 신뢰하는 모든 사람들은 "하나님의 친구"(약 2:23)라 불릴 수 있습니다.PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, thank you for sending Jesus, our Savior and Friend. Enable us, we pray, to help, comfort, and stand by each other, as he has done with us. Hold out the word of the life ... (Philippians 2:16)생명의 말씀을 밝혀 ... (빌 2:16)If I rejoice in Jesus Christ, then I will rejoice in the gift of his Word. There is no better way to rejoice in Christ than to learn from the Bible who he is, what he has done, and the hope he gives.제가 만일 예수 그리스도를 기뻐한다면, 저는 그의 말씀의 선물을 기뻐할 것입니다. 그가 누구신지, 무슨 일을 하셨는지, 어떤 소망을 주시는지에 대해 성경에서 배우는 길 이외에 달리 그리스도를 기뻐할 더 좋은 길은 없기 때문입니다.In fact, it's a joy to receive God's Word of truth and grace, to embrace it as the foundation and guide for life, and to hold it out to all as the voice of hope. But why do that? Here's the reason: the Word is God's invitation to enter a love relationship with him, a relationship made possible through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ.사실상 진리와 은혜의 하나님 말씀을 받아드리고, 그 말씀을 삶의 토대와 가이드로 수용하며, 소망의 목소리로서 모든 사람에게 전하는 것이 기쁨입니다. 하지만 왜 그래야 합니까? 그 이유는 다음과 같습니다. 하나님의 말씀은 그와 사랑의 관계를 맺으라는 하나님의 초청이기 때문입니다. 그 관계는 그의 아들 예수 그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 통해 가능해진 관계입니다.As a result, the believer no longer needs to live in fear of God but enjoys the daily assurance that nothing can take away the Lord's enduring love. And this leads to joy-filled eternal hope.  그 결과  믿는 자는 더 이상 하나님을 두려워하면서 살 필요가 없고 매일 아무것도 주님의 지속적인 사랑을 앗아갈 수 없다는 확신을 누립니다. 그리고 이 확신이 기쁨이 충만한 영원한 소망으로 인도해 줍니다.When most religions teach that we must initiate contact with a god or some higher being, earn our salvation by doing good, and live in fear, isn't it a joyful privilege to receive, embrace, and hold out the word of the free gift of life in Jesus Christ?대부분의 종교들은 우리가 먼저 어떤 신이나 더 높은 존재자에게 접촉을 시도해야 한다고 가르치며, 선행을 해서 자신의 구원을 획득해야 하고, 두려움 가운데서 살아야 한다고 가르칩니다. 그러므로 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 값없이 누리는 생명의 선물에 대한 말씀을 받고 수용하고 전파하는 것이 즐거운 특권이지 않겠습니까?   Many people speak of "a god" but do not really know who that is. Christians, however, know who the true God is and the joy he brings. You can too.많은 사람들은 "어떤 신"에 대해 말하지만 그 신이 어떤 신인지는 진정 모르고 있습니다. 그러나 그리스도인들은 참 하나님이 누구신지, 그가 제공해 주시는 기쁨이 무엇인지를 잘 알고 있습니다. 여러분도 그럴 수 있습니다.  PRAYER (기도)Dear Lord, thank you for clearly revealing to me who you are, what you do, and the hope you give. May  your Word continue to accomplish its work in every human heart. Become blameless and pure ... shine like stars in the universe. (Philippians 2:14-15)모든 일에 원망과 시비가 없이 하라. 이는 너희가 흠이 없고 순전하여 ... 세상에서 그들 가운데 빛들로 나타내며 ... (빌 2:14-15)Where I live, the stars shine brightly against the night sky. Neither urban smog nor city lights drown out their brilliance. In the same way, followers of Jesus are "to shine like stars in the universe." "To shine like stars" in this way means to live as pure children of God. It means to possess an uncompromising devotion to learn and live by the will of God in Jesus Christ.제가 살고 있는 곳에서는 밤 하늘에 밝게 빛나는 별들을 볼 수 있습니다. 도시의 스모그도 도심의 불빛도 그 별들의 찬란함을 삼킬 수는 없습니다. 마찬가지로 예수님을 따르는 제자들은 "우주 가운데 떠 있는 별들처럼 빛을 내야" 합니다. 이런 식으로 "별들처럼 찬란한 빛을 뿜어내라"는 것은 하나님의 순전한 자녀들로서 살아가라는 뜻입니다. 그 말은 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 뜻을 배우고 그 뜻에 의해 살아가겠다는 타협없는 헌신을 품는 것을 말합니다.How do we live a pure life? First, God's pure light shines on us in order to dispel the darkness of our personal sin. Purity is God's gracious gift. It is not the fruit of human effort. Second, God's pure light shines within us. The smog of sin daily clouds the mind, and the dazzling temptations of the world easily blind the heart. We need God's light to daily correct and guide us. Finally, God's light shines through us, allowing us to reflect the Lord's brilliance within the world's darkness.우리가 어떻게 순전한 삶을 살아갑니까? 첫째, 하나님의 순전한 빛은 우리의 개인적인 죄의 흑암을 흩어버리기 위해서 우리 위에 비칩니다. 순전함은 하나님의 은혜의 선물입니다. 그것은 인간의 노력의 열매가 아닙니다. 둘째, 하나님의 순전한 빛은 우리 안에서 빛을 냅니다. 죄의 스모그는 매일 정신을 흐리게 합니다. 그리고 세상의 휘황찬란한 유혹들은 쉽게 마음의 눈을 가립니다. 우리는 매일 우리를 시정해주고 가이드 해 줄 하나님의 빛을 필요로 합니다. 마지막으로, 하나님의 빛은 우리를 통해서 빛을 내뿜습니다. 그렇게 해서 우리가 세상의 어두움 가운데서 주님의 찬란함을 비추어 줄 수 있게 됩니다.    Many people want to live "the good life," but their never ending quest often leaves a trail of greed, neglected children, unhappy marriages, and other hurts. The only way to escape these patterns of darkness is to learn God's will and to live it out in our daily lives. Do our lives reflect the brilliance of God's gracious Word and work? Or do we remain in sin's darkness?많은 사람들은 "선한 삶"을 살기를 원합니다. 그러나 그들의 끊이지 않는 추구는 흔히 탐욕과 소홀히 되는 자녀들, 불행한 결혼 및 여타의 상처들의 자취를 남깁니다. 이러한 어둠의 패턴을 피할 수 있는 유일한 길은 하나님의 뜻을 배우고 우리의 매일의 생활 가운데서 그 뜻을 행하며 살아가는 것입니다. 우리의 삶은 하나님의 은혜로운 말씀과 사역의 찬란함을 비추어내고 있습니까? 아니면 여전히 죄의 어두움 속에서 우리가 살아가고 있습니까?PRAYER (기도) Lord, how great and awesome you are.
