"--- 오직 각 사람이 시험을 받는 것은 자기 욕심에 끌려 미혹됨이니" (약 1:14) 

A good friend of mine is a skillful fisherman. He has told me many times that the reason why I am not good at fishing is because I lack the patience.

저의 친한 벗 한 사람은 솜씨 좋은 낚시꾼입니다. 그는 제가 낚시질을 잘 못하는 이유는 제게 인내심이 부족하기 때문이라고 수 차례 말했습니다.

He said that when the flesh sees the live bait, the fish will not bite on it the first time. Instead, it will hit the bait lightly to see if there is any reaction or danger. If I pull the pole immediately, I will get nothing. But if the fish sees that nothing happens, it will think that the bait is safe to bite. That's when I should pull the pole.

그의 말에 따르면, 물고기가 살아있는 미끼를 보았을 때 그 물고기가 그 미끼를 처음부터 덥석 물지 않는다고 합니다. 먼저 어떤 반응이 있는지, 위험이 있는지 알아보기 위해 미끼를 가볍게 친다는 것입니다. 만일 내가 낚싯대를 즉시 잡아당기면, 아무것도 못잡게 됩니다. 그러나 만일 그 물고기가 아무 일도 일어나지 않는 것을 보게 되면, 물고기는 그 미끼를 삼켜도 안전하다고 생각할 것입니다. 바로 그 때 낚싯대를 당겨야 한다는 것입니다.  

Temptations are like that too. They look so harmless at first. Don't believe it when people say that using drugs occasionally will not become an addiction, or that you can always get out of an extramarital affair if you want. James says that if we allow ourselves to be "dragged away and enticed," then our "desire --- gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." By the time we realize there is something wrong, it is already too late.

유혹 역시 그와 같습니다. 유혹 역시 처음에는 전혀 무해한 것처럼 보입니다. 사람들이 복용해도 꼭 중독되지는 않는다거나 만일 원한다면 혼외정사에서 언제든 빠져 나올 수 있다고 말할 때 그 말을 믿지 마십시오. 야고보는 만일 우리가 "끌려 미혹되도록" 자기를 내어주게 되면, 그 때 우리의 "욕심이 --- 죄를 낳고, 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳는다"고 말합니다. 뭔가 잘못되었다고 우리가 느끼는 순간에는 이미 너무 늦었습니다.   

Paul told Timothy to "flee --- evil desires." Run away from them, just as Joseph ran away from Potiphar's wife when she tried to seduce him(Genesis 39). Don't even look back; don't give Satan a chance. Deep down we all know the areas in which we are most prone to fall into temptation. Take Paul's advice and stay far away from them.  

바울은 디모데에게 "악한 욕심을 피하라"고 말했습니다. 보디발의 아내가 요셉을 유혹하려고 시도했을 때 요셉이 그 여자를 피해 도망했듯이(창 39장), 악한 정욕으로부터 피하십시오. 뒤돌아보기조차 마십시오. 사탄에게 기회를 주지 마십시오.  우리 모두는 우리가 유혹에 빠지기 쉬운 가장 약한 부분들이 어딘지를 잘 알고 있습니다. 바울의 충고를 받아들여 그런 약점을 피하십시오.

PRAYER (기도)

Father, forgive us for falling into temptations so easily. Holy Spirit, help us not to see, listen, think, or do things that are displeasing to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. 

하나님 아버지, 너무나도 쉽게 유혹에 빠지는 우리를 용서해 주시옵소서. 성령님, 당신을 근심케 하는 것들을 보지도 듣지도 생각하지도 행하지도 않게 저희를 도와주시옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도 드립니다. 아멘
